英語雙引號裏的話語，在英語語法上叫“直接引語”。雙引號中句子謂語動詞使用什麼時態，根據說話人反映當時的時間爲準，可以使用任何時態。例如：He said to me，“I often play basketball ”（他對我說，“我經常打籃球”），引語中的謂語動詞使用一般現在時，因爲說話人強調often（經常）。
再如，“Did you go shopping yesterday”Kate asked.（凱特問到：“你昨天去購物了嗎”）說話人強調的是昨天的事，故引語中謂語動詞使用一般過去時。
