in fact的意思是實際上,其實,確切的說,就等於in effecton fact 是關於事實,以事實爲基礎

例 :

She looks 50 but in fact she's more than 60.

1、in fact和actually 譯爲“實際上/事實上”

1)用來修正前邊說的話

--I hear that you are a doctor – actually, I’m a dentist. ——我聽說你是個醫生——實際上,我是個牙醫。

It may sound very straightforward to you, but in fact it’s complicated. 這對你來說可能聽起來很簡單,但實際上很複雜。

2)提供更加詳細的或意想不到的資訊

I didn't fail the exam in fact I did rather well! 我沒有考不及格,事實上,我考得不錯!

His departure, in fact, went almost unremarked. 事實上,他的離去幾乎沒被注意到。

The lecture was so boring that I actually fell asleep before the speaker had finished. 講座太無聊了,演講者還沒講完我就睡着了。

2、 indeed 強調陳述句,譯爲“確實/的確”

It is indeed a remarkable achievement. 這的確是非凡的成就

We live in strange times indeed. 我們確實生活在一個奇怪的時代。

3、 virtually 沒有100%,但實際上有99%

Virtually all cooking was done over coal-fired ranges. 事實上所有的烹飪都是在燒煤的爐竈上完成的。(也有一些些例外)

He virtually admitted he was guilty. 他實際上已承認自己有罪。(沒有明說,但差不多是)

This year's results are virtually the same as last year's. 今年的結果幾乎和去年的一樣。
