看主語是否可數，不可數Water，則用was
可數，students，用were
there is no後面接單數
例:
There is no money.沒有錢了
不可數名詞，單數。
There are no apples.
可數名字，複數。
當no作爲限定詞時，它後面可以接可數名詞或不可數名詞。
通常情況下，當no後面接可數名詞時，該名詞使用複數，特別是當涉及到"there are…"， "……has…"這樣的句型時
比如：
(1) It was early December and there were no leaves on the trees.
(2) The room has no windows.
(3) No road accidents were reported in Chelsea throughout August.
但是在一些情況下，no後面的可數名詞也可以使用單數，而是否使用單數的關鍵在於說話者認爲這個名詞屬於單數還是複數

這裏wife雖然是可數名詞，但是句子一般不能寫成：I have no wives. 因爲通常情況下一個人只有一個妻子。
又比如：
He must lead a lonely life in that village: he has no wife and no children.
這裏用no children比用no child要更加自然
